Project Purpose

Rasei intends to develop a sustainable conductive composite using organic material such as bamboo and flax. This patent-pending innovation aims to create an environmentally beneficial composite that could be utilised to replace glass fibre and other materials in applications that require structurally strong, light weight, durable materials that also have a need to be conductive. Creating a conductive sustainable composite, to be primarily exploited in the production of wind turbine blades, provides Rasei with an opportunity to mitigate several existing problems including material wear, visibility for radar, and icing on the blades. Creation of Rasei’s new sustainable composite will utilise our current patented technology of graphene infused resin to create conductivity.

The desire to switch to bamboo or falx enables us to address the environmental challenges faced in certain sectors concerning downstream products, as well as the challenges regarding the sustainable production of an advanced material. Combining the organic fibres with a bio-resin infused with functionalised graphene will also dramatically reduce the negative environmental impact of products manufactured using this new game-changing material.

The purpose of our project is to develop a greener advanced conductive composite than is currently available. By introducing our patented graphene technology to an organic based composite, we will be able to send electrical signals, deploy sensors along the blades, and deliver secondary advantages such as lightning protection. Our new advanced and sustainable material will facilitate signal distribution through the product to enable remote end of life determination, a particular advantage for offshore wind turbines where extremely high costs are incurred annually for maintenance assessments.

Being awarded this grant serves as a catalyst for Rasei’s aspirations and validates our vision and potential for impact. The support from Innovate UK, strengthens our resolve to drive positive change and gives us the resources and support needed to make a tangible difference. With passion, dedication, and a clear roadmap, we are confident that we will achieve remarkable outcomes. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Innovate UK and all those who believe in our mission. Together, we will empower innovation and create a better future for all.
